Hydroton®

Hydroton®

Notice: Small pebbles are currently unavailable. We have big pebbles (15-25 mm) only. If you prefer your pebbles on the smaller size, please check out Grow!t (8-16mm).

Hydroton clay pebbles (also known as LECA, exclay, clay balls, hydro corn, "lava rock", brown marble things, small balls/big balls, etc.) are made by heating pH neutral clay to around 1,200 °C (2,190 °F) in a rotary kiln. Despite common misperceptions, Hydroton is not volcanic. (You may be thinking of pumice, which is also a great product but is significantly more expensive!)

Hydroton's air to moisture ratio makes it ideal for hydroponics. Because it is so lightweight, easy for transplanting and harvesting, and easy on the hands, it is a favourite of small producers using media bed or Dutch bucket techniques. It can be used to fill plastic net cups in aeroponic and NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) systems, as a medium for drip irrigation systems, or as a medium for container gardening. It can also be used to create unique water features and to ensure a humid environment, healthy soil conditions, and superior plant growth in vivariums and living terrariums!

Hydroton clay pebbles hold water extremely well and offer good capillary action. It is reusable, clean, and odourless. Hydroton can be mixed with heavy soil to improve its aeration and drainage. Hydroton brand expanded clay is semi-porous and generally does not float as other products can.

The 50 litre bag will fill about 4x 5gal containers.

Perfect for a passive, wick, and sub-irrigation use, individual hydroculture pots or hydroponic systems. Reuse over and over by sterilizing in a very mild bleach solution (about 1/2 cup per gallon of water).

Make sure to rinse your HYDROTON before use!
